Grading:
Your wiki page will be graded on the following categories
Presentation (10 points)
Is the page free of misspellings or poor grammar?
Does it use pictures and/or videos to illustrate the information?
Does it have a consistant layout style (fonts, indentations, justification, colors, etc)?
Is it structured and logical in its organization (headings, subheadings, etc) or does it look like a random collection of facts?
Creativity/Originality (10 points)
Is this clearly the student's own work, or is it copied/paraphrased from other web sources?
Does the student's voice show though in the writing?
Does it present the information in an interesting, engaging, or surprising fashion?
Scientific Information (20 points)
Are all aspects of the species' biology addressed?
Is the information at an appropriate and understandable level for a high-school student?
Is the information from a variety of sources (as opposed to being all from wikipedia, for example)?
Does the information show some in-depth detail or is it just a list of dry facts?
Research Outline (10 points)
I will add the score from your outline to make the entire project worth 50 points.
Fish Research Project Wiki
The purpose of this project is to provide you an opportunity to do some in-depth research on a fish species of your choice. You will create a wiki page for your species that will include: in-depth information about the species, embedded pictures and/or video, and links to additional information. Your first task will be to create a research outline. You will then take that outline and expand it into the wiki page.
Phase One: Outline your Research
An outline is an condensed picture of the parts of your project in the order in which they will come. Use your outline to:
-
figure out the order in which your subtopics will appear on your wiki page
-
see if you have enough (or too much) information for each section
-
demonstrate to me that you have done your research and are ready to start the wiki page
As you research, figure out the best order for the information to be in, using subtopics that you create. There is always more than one way to do this, so figure out what youlike best.
Use a consistant outline format (I, II, III; A, B, C; 1., 2., 3.; (a), (b), (c), etc)
As you are researching, save pictures and videos you think would be good to include in your wiki page.
Save the URL of different web sites that you visit so that you can link to them from your wiki page as well.
Once you are done with the outline, you will check it with me and I will give you your username and password to start building your wiki!
Phase Two: Creating your Wiki Page
Logging in and getting your page set up:
-
Go to http://mohimarinebio.pbworks.com
-
Login with your username and password. Try not to lose this information.
-
From the front page that I created, click on “Create a Page”
-
Name your page after your fish species (e.g. “Orange Clownfish”)
-
You will now be taken to your wiki page.
- Notice the two tabs on top: “View” and “Edit” – the purpose of those should be obvious.
- Below that are the standard word-processing tools as well as buttons to add a link to another page or to add Plugins.
- At the bottom is the Save button – no changes are finalized until you press that button.
Making your page:
-
First you will make a title. You can make Headings easily by choosing the Format drop down menu. Your first heading should be the Title (the name of fish your page is about) of your page. Make this in Heading 1 format.
-
Your second heading should be Author. Put your name and period under that.
-
From here you can use your research outline to create the page. Expand your outline into paragraphs of text, pictures, videos, and other media.
-
You can spell-check your page when you are done using the spellcheck button up top.
-
Your grade on this project will be based on the information contained on your wiki page as well as the effort you put in to include pictures, videos, and other media plugins.
-
You can check out other student's pages for inspiration, ideas, layout help, etc. Please refrain from editing their pages! You can comment on them as long as its appropriate and constructive.
